Who We Are
Early in the 1600’s, a small handful
of believers joined together to form a church meeting in a one room schoolhouse
known as “The Crossroads School.” In 1909, the church bought a piece of land
across from what had become know as Sardis Schoolhouse for $10 where they would
build a church and the construction began. Over the next 50 years several additions
were made and in 1961, the first parsonage was built. In 1968, the “Younger
Adult Class” held a chicken supper to raise money to buy new window panes for
their classroom. The supper was such a huge success they decided to build a new
church.
Ground breaking was in 1969 for the new church.
Several projects were held to raise money for the building fund. Unfortunately,
this building burned in May of 1982. Once again, through God’s abundance,
determination of committed members, and fund raising efforts, the church was
rebuilt on the same sight that very year. Various additions and building
projects have added much needed space for our growing congregation through the
years. A new parsonage was built in 1998 and a Christian Life
Center (gym) in 2000. In
2003 the Christian
Life Center
was added on to, making room for more Sunday school rooms and a new Youth
Ministry room. The church continues to grow, both in number and outreach. Sardis has the privilege to
give to our community through Upward Basketball, food pantry, Nursing Home
ministries, men’s and ladies’ organizations, and sponsoring Foreign Mission
Trips.
Being a part of the United Methodist denomination,
the mission statement for our own local Conference area of Southern Alabama and
Northwest Florida is “To build healthy
churches.” Sardis
is definitely a healthy and vibrant church. We acknowledge God is still on the
throne, Jesus Christ is alive and well, and the Holy Spirit has freedom to move
and inspire us through lively worship services. Sardis is an exciting church that is Biblically
focused and Spirit led. We are indeed,
“A growing church for a coming Lord.”
